In this one hiking trip you will visit many interesting sites of the Navarino bay area. You will learn more about the 5000 years of history and mythology of the area. You will see golden beach, the path past the lagoon, the dunes, voidokilia beach, Nestor’s Cave and Paliokastro.
The Parkranger will pick you up at your hotel or residence with a Mercedes G-Class 4×4 (max. 5 persons)
You will drive to your start location and you can enjoy the scenery as it passes by you. We will stop wherever you want to take pictures (photo safari). You will see some beautiful olive trees and we will drive to the chapel of Illias to take pictures of the amazing view.
CHAPEL OF ILLIAS
With the 4×4 Mercedes we will drive up to the Chapel of Illias. A place with a beautiful view and great photo opportunity.
THRASYMEDES TOMB, THE SON OF KING NESTOR
We will walk to the grave of the son of King Nestor. A tholos thomb witch is escavated in the 60’s and where great findings have been done.
VOIDOKILIA BEACH (START POINT HIKE )
Your hiking walkabout will start at one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. The Voidokilia beach. We will walk past the shoreline the complete beach till we reach the high dunes. Our target is the old Nestor’s Cave. A place with history and mythology.
HIKE TO NESTOR’S CAVE
The Parkranger will tell you the story of Nestor’s Cave, it’s history and mythology. You will discover the cave yourself with a flashlight and can see the full interieur.
After a drink and a snack, and lot’s of pictures of the cave and the view of Voidokilia, the hike will continue by climbing up to Paleokastro, the old castle of the franks.
HIKE TO PALEOKASTRO
You will enjoy the beautiful scenery’s when you arrive at the old Franks castle of Paleokastro. You will have a great view of the voidokilia beach, the lagoon, the island of Sfakteria and the Navarino Bay area. You will discover an ancient path that will lead you to the old entrance of the Castle.
THE WALK DOWN TO DIVARI (GOLDEN) BEACH
Through the old entrance of the castle we will walk down to the Golden Beach of Divari. There are plenty of photo opportunities when you walk down this ancient path.
GOLDEN BEACH DIVARI AND THE NAVARINO BAY
You will see the (side entrance) of the Navarino Bay witch is blocked by the Turks (Ottoman) with blocks to prevent the entrance be used by hostiles who wanted to attack the Turks from behind. You will see an ancient Roman well and other ancient sights.
THE BEAUTIFUL VOIDOKILIA DUNES
You will walk the ancient path that runs past the Gialova lagoon about 1.5 km. to the Voidokilia dunes and pass through the dunes to Voidokilia Beach, witch is one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.
ARRIVAL AT VOIDOKILIA BEACH AND THE 4X4
We will arrive at the finish of this beautiful hike. The hike is about 2-3 hours or more, depending on the breaks and the condition of the group we are travelling with.
We can go for lunch at one of the restaurants or for coffee and share/upload the photos and video’s to our group or social media.
PALIOKASTRO, PALEOKASTRO or PALAIOKASTRO
(Παλιοναβαρίνο) Palionavarino (old Navarino castle)
The old castle/fortress of Paliokastro was built by the Franks around 1278 / 13th (it’s built on the ruins of a ancient Acropolis from the Pylos-Koryphasion city of Classical period), is situated the north side of Navarino bay, on the top of the hill (called Koryphasion -or Coryphasion-).
The castle is in ruin, but the outside walls and his round and square towers is saved in a good condition.
Paliokastro castle lost his importance when in 1573 the Turks built a new fortress (Neokastro) at the southern entrance of the Navarino bay.
Below the castle, in the cliff just above Voidokilia, you find a cave referred to as Nestor’s cave by ancient Greek traveller Pausanias; according to Greek mythology, it was there that Hermes hid the cattle he had stolen from his brother, Apollo; However, the latter found out and as a penance Hermes offered him a lyre made of tortoise shell.
The excursion to the old Navarino castle (Paliokastro) is highly recommended, you will enjoy the wonderful panorama that unfolds in front of you, the view from Paliokastro hill is unique in all directions :
– To the north: you see Voidokilia Bay and Romanou-Petrochori beaches in the distance. – To the east: the Gialova Divari lagoon, the Peloponnesian hills covered with olive trees. – In the south: the Sykias chanel, the Sphacteria island, the Navarino bay and the city of Pylos. – To the west: the vast Ionian Sea.
You can visit the Paliokastro castle from two ways:
• By car: from Gialova, take the road along the golden beach and the lagoon, when the road in a gravel path that finish in dead-end; there, you can park your vehicle (facing the northern tip of Sphacteria island – next to the Sykias Chanel). Then, a path allows the ascension of the promontory to enter the castle.
• Hiking/footpath: at the end of Voidokilia beach, begin your climb up the hill. The path leads passes through the Nestor’s cave.
Beware of vegetation and shrubs! To enjoy this hike it’s recommended to wear long trousers and closed shoes for the climb.
